What is the SASSA R350 SRD Grant?
This grant was first introduced in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when millions of people became unemployed. Its purpose was to provide some relief to the economically weaker people.
This assistance amount of R350 is given to those who:
- are unemployed,
- are not availing any other government assistance or pension,
- and who have no other source of income.
- This grant has helped more than 11 million South Africans so far.

- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee or migrant with valid documents.
- Be between 18 and 59 years of age.

How to apply? (Step-by-Step Process)
1.Apply online (the easiest way)
- Visit the website: https://srd.sassa.gov.za
- Enter your ID number and mobile number.
- Verify through OTP and fill in bank details.
2. Apply via WhatsApp
- Save the number: 082 046 8553
- Type “SRD” and send it and follow the instructions.
3. GovChat or Facebook Messenger
- Apply via the GovChat website or SASSA’s Facebook chatbot service.
4. In-Person
- Apply by visiting your nearest SASSA office (in special cases).
How to check the status?
- Go to the website: Status Check Page
- Enter your ID and mobile number and submit.
- You will see if your application is “Approved”, “Pending” or “Declined”.
If the application is rejected, you can appeal within 30 days.
Where and how will you receive payment?
1. To bank account (fastest method)
- Payment will be sent directly to your bank account.
- Make sure your bank details are correct and match the ID.
2. Cash Send option
- If you do not have a bank account, cash can be withdrawn through mobile number.
3. From retail stores
- You can receive payment from stores like Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, and Usave.
- Keep ID and mobile number with you.
4. Post Office
- This facility is now being gradually discontinued. Confirm in advance whether your local branch has the facility or not.
